Cotton is derived from natural cotton plants, it is a staple fiber, which means it is composed of different, varying lengths which is then spun into yarn that is woven in different patterns to create fabrics. Staple length refers to the length of the fibers used to weave the cotton into a sheet. There are basically three lengths:
- Short staple (typically 1-1/8 inch)
- Long staple (at least 1-1/4 inch)
- Extra-long staple (between 1-3/8 & 2 inches in length).
The longer the staple the higher the quality of the cotton, softness and durability of the fabric.
Typical examples of cotton staples include cotton, cotton percale and cotton mixed with polyester and so on….
What is Thread count?
Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the smoother and softer the fabric generally is. Materials with a high thread count last longer and wear well.
COTTON
Cotton sheets are renowned for their supple and gentle feel. Cotton is well ventilated fabric and tamps down temperature for sleepers who overheat in bed. Cotton is non irritating fabric, making it a friendly choice for people with sensitive skin combined with its breathability. Over all cotton’s fresh light build feel makes it for an ideal year round sheet. Plus, the more you wash the softer they get.
COTTON PERCALE
A Percale Cotton weave produces a matt finish, creating a smooth sheet that feels crisp and cool to the touch. High quality percale sheets are made with fine yarn and long cotton fibers. Feel extremely luxurious, cosy and breathable.
COTTON SATEEN
Sateen refers to a weave pattern rather than a material. This weave uses a one yarn under, three or four yarns over pattern. This gives it a heavier feel than some other weaves, like percale, and sleepers may feel this weightiness makes the sheets seem especially luxurious and cosy.
POLY COTTON
Poly cotton is a mixture of cotton rich fabric (50-60% cotton) with the polyester making up the rest. One of the most popular affordable and cosy fabric. The man-made polyester fabric is woven with natural cotton to create a hybrid that is durable, lightweight, and soft. This fabric is breathable and moisture absorbent.
